I wrote this poem last year, and was reminded again of the poem watching Obama’s video update on the BP Oil Spill here.

If America can change
so can I
tunnels for vision
and hatred in the hearts
Oh, these-
cold hearts for black hatred
feared into being by losers
being lesser than promised
losers who listened to
the fear
preyed upon the poor
unfortunate
isolated, in a wilderness of still sameness
these childrenof the dark side,
the world is-
(pause)
holding its breath-
and we pray in angels
to protect this boy
a man who shone out of
place
who came from across the sea
to remind us of a greatness
long forgotten
he awoke the tide
and today we throw
the world on his shoulders
bake this mess into a
cake we cry
but this traveler
no, he is not a maker
not a cleaner
not a fixer-
a conduit; smooth-talking
captain of calm
march! he cries
he knows his power is
not his to keep
a magnet of movement
he opens the gates
he wants You,
America
he wants you, to step up to
the plate
throbbing heart
pulsing to a steady tune
reminds us time is a train
rushing by
the world is waiting
